Gyu King Teppanyaki

Gyu King Teppanyaki is a Japanese grill located in Vancouver. Brother deer and Old bean ended up going to Gyu King Teppanyaki on a Saturday evening using a Groupon deal. You had to reserve a table beforehand and they didn’t have a lot of openings for people using Groupon deals as opposed to booking without one which was a bit annoying.

Salad

The meal started off with a simple Japanese salad with greens topped with a carrot ginger dressing and a scant piece of smoked salmon. Nothing too special here but it could have been a bit bigger.

Miso soup

The other appetizer dish they got was the lobster miso soup. It tasted like the soup was cooked with lobster shells. The actual lobster tail is served later as one of the courses in the meal.

The other vegetable dish provided was the pan fried veggies that consisted of lots of cabbage and some broccoli.

Stir-fry veggies

Although it looked like a lot on the pan, it ended up shrinking and they didn’t actually get that much of it in the end. The veggies themselves weren’t seasoned with anything. However, they were provided with dipping sauces to flavour their food with. There was a hot sauce, mixed spice and a soy sauce.

Seafood

Next was the seafood course which consisted with a thin piece of salmon (about 2 oz), 3 shrimps, and 1 jumbo scallop. The seafood was cooked well but could have used more of a char to add more flavor to it. I mean when you’re at a grill you want there to actually have flavor from it right?

Beef Tenderloin

The meats came next and they got a beef tenderloin to share as well as some ribeye usuyaki which is seared ribeye wrapped around egg and green onions. It was really just one piece that was cut into 4 portions. There was some browning on these pieces but Brother Deer said everything was pretty oily though.

Fried rice

Last but not least was the fried rice. It had some beef pieces in it but a majority of it was just rice and some frozen veg. They were not very impressed by it either. At least the gelato that came after this helped cheer them up at the end of the meal.

Both brother deer and Old bean said that the meal wasn’t really worth it even with the groupon because the portions were so small in size. Even though there were “11 courses” they didn’t leave very full because there wasn’t a lot to go around between the two of the. They also said that the food was quite oily from the amount of oil that was poured on the grill before cooking. Brother deer said he was disappointed because there wasn’t any of the usual “theatrics” you would expect from a teppanyaki experience.
