akd soup and goods

AKD Kitchen Soup + Goods is a Japanese restaurant located by New Westminster skytrain station. AKD Kitchen is spacious on the inside with 4 tables and a bar dining area to ensure that tables are distanced. Along the wall there are trinkets and books on the shelving to add a homey feel to the restaurant.

The menu at AKD Kitchen is simple. They have 7 different types of ramen offerings with 2 soup bases to choose from. You can either choose the “black” soy-based soup base with black garlic or “red” a miso-based soup base. The 7 ramens to choose from vary depending on what topping you choose. They have chicken chashu, egg, and cheese as some of their notable toppings. Chicken chashu is the default meat option for all their ramens but you can opt to change to pork chashu as well. In addition to their ramen dishes, they also offer a curry of the week.

Original black ramen

The ramen broth here is RICH. It is flavourful, packed full of creaminess and the dash of garlic oil on top added a roasted flavour. The slices of chicken chashu on top were chicken breast but to my surprise, they were not dry at all. The ramen noodles were thin with a little bit of a chew to it so if you are a fan of chewier ramen, this might not be the spot for you. Other toppings it came with included green onions, yu choy and a piece of seaweed. Simple and delicious.

Curry of the week

The curry of the week was a type of croquette on top of their signature curry sauce. I wish they would have let us know what the curry of the week was because we had no clue. To be fair, we also could have asked. Grayson and I have had our share of Japanese curry so we were looking forward to trying out the one from here. The curry had a heavy tomato and carrot base because the sweetness of carrots and tartness of tomatoes were what we noticed first. The curry was on the chunky side which we weren’t used to but it was very flavourful and delicious.

The croquette on top held up well against the hot curry it laid on top of. I think it was a seafood croquette because there were some shrimp and potato inside. That’s just my guess. It was fried crispy on the outside and the crunch that came with each bite was oh so satisfying. Even a non-fried foods eater like myself could appreciate the craftsmanship behind this gem. I was impressed by both the service and home style dishes at AKD Kitchen. Some may call their menu limited but sometimes simple is best.
