Yah Yah Ya ramen

It’s been a while since Grayson and I have gone for ramen so we decided to go for some this last weekend I think the last time we went was in the middle of summer when we went to Ramen Gaoh. This time we decided to try something new and go try out Yah Yah Ya ramen! Yah Yah Ya ramen has a location in Richmond and downtown Vancouver.

Yah Yah Ya ramen is a ramen shop that specializes in Yokohama style ramen. Fun fact, there’s actually a ramen museum in Yokohama in Japan. It’s a blast so if you ever get the chance, you should definitely stop by. Anyway, Yah Yah Ya ramen has a location in downtown Vancouver and another in Richmond.

We went to the Richmond location at around 6pm on a Saturday and they were pretty behind on getting people seated. There were lots of tables that weren’t cleared yet so people had to wait at the door to be seated.

Mazesoba

We decided to get two cold ramens and make one of them an onigiri combo. The maze soba was something I really wanted to have since I haven’t had it since I had the one at Kokoro tokyo mazesoba. Maze soba is essentially cold ramen noodles that you can mix ground meat, bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, seaweed and an egg into so that it becomes almost like pasta! This type of ramen noodles also come with a bowl of rice on the side so you can eat the leftover toppings from your ramen with it when you’re done. I really like that because that way you don’t end up wasting any food!

Kimchi cold ramen

I can’t eat Korean food anymore so I decided to take advantage of the moment and order the spicy kimchi cold ramen. This ramen was topped with chashu, seaweed, cucumber, bean sprouts and kimchi. The flavour profile of this ramen was completely different than the maze soba as it was much more acidic than creamy. It was more refreshing because it had “lighter” feeling ingredients and the contrast between the two was vast even though they were both cold ramen dishes. The chashu here is pretty lean but not very flavourful or tender. However, the kimchi came with a lot of the pickling liquid so it helped add liquid to the noodles. Overall, it was pretty good and I appreciated the kimchi in it.

Onigiri

The onigiri came with furikake (Japanese seasoning with bonito flakes, sesame seeds and nori). They weren’t anything special since it was really just triangular shaped seasoned rice so we ended up mixing them in with the remainder of our ramen toppings which worked out great.

Quick bites

  1. Lots of cold and hot ramen options
  2. You can make it a combo if you’re feeling extra hungry
  3. Service could have been more attentive
