Sugar Lab

Sugar Lab is a dessert and drink cafe located “hidden” along Grimmer street in Burnaby. If you haven’t located this area yet, you should totally give it a visit because there are a handful of cafes located here including Sweethoney dessert, T’s home fresh soda tea, and Ben Gong’s tea.

Sugar Lab offers a variety of dessert options to choose from. They are most known for their crepe cakes and always have them in the display window. That’s not all they have though because they also have mochi, dessert soup, pudding, bubble tea drinks and shaved ice.

Sugar lab menu

While all their dessert options looked tasty, we were going to eat our desserts outside so we wanted something portable. We decided to go with their pudding cups because that seemed the easiest to eat out of everything on the menu.

Plus it looked super cute in the photo so why not! However, I was disappointed to see that the portion of the pudding in the photo compared to the one that we were taking to-go was so different! I understand that there are only a limited amount of plastic cups you can find to serve this as a take-out item but it was definitely at least 25% smaller!

Serradura Pudding cup

I wasn’t sure what this was so I decided to try it out. So what I was expecting was a layered pudding because it was a “pudding cup.” Unfortunately, it was layers of “serradura” powder and whip cream with hardly any pudding at the bottom. I was so disappointed because I was so excited to try this out.

The serradura powder had a malty taste to it and reminded me of graham cracker. I actually quite liked the flavour of this but it was so difficult to mix with the rest of the ingredients in the cup. Plus, it didn’t mix very well so what I was left with was a thick grainy whipped cream mixture. When I finally got down to the pudding, I was hoping for something silky or creamy in consistency but the pudding was more firm like jelly. Needless to say I wasn’t very impressed.

Fresh fruit pudding cup

The fresh fruit pudding cup was pretty much the same but with more whipped cream than the serradura one. Again, not very impressed at the lack of substance in the cup. I could make this myself and expected more from a shop known for their desserts.

The fresh fruits in the cup was quite enjoyable though. There were cubes of cantaloupe, mango, strawberry, watermelon and kiwi! The fruit was the highlight of the whole thing!
