Chocolate fig bars (clean eats/vegan)

June 29, 2014
I bought a jar of apple sauce recently and I’ve been experimenting with it in bakes ever since! Apple sauce can be used to add sweetness to bakes and can be used in place of oil as well. I’ve never used apple sauce in bakes before but I’ve heard that it gives things a “cake-ier” texture…which is something I tend to gravitate towards because I like lighter treats. I’ve also been trying to wean myself off  sugars so I’ve experimenting with the whole natural sugars thing as well. But of course, that doesn’t sit well with everyone else in the bunny household because they don’t eat the same way I do so I have to give and take every so often. But for this recipe, I sweetened it my way by using figs, apple sauce and honey! I think it turned out pretty good because there was just a hint of sweetness but if you like things sweet you might want to add a little more honey or better yet, replace the egg with a mashed banana for sweetness!
Simple. Clean. Ingredients.

1/2 cup oats
1/2 cup almond flour or all purpose flour
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 tablespoon ground flax seeds
1 egg (or 1 tablespoon ground flax + 3 tablespoons water or 1 banana)
1/4 cup apple sauce
1/4 cup honey or agave
1/3 cup chopped dried figs
1 teaspoon baking powder

The how to:

Combine all the dry ingredients into a bowl. Stir in the wet ingredients and fold in the dried figs.

Bake at 325F for 20 minutes until firm to touch. Let cool, cut into squares and MUNCH!
