I went over to the lovely island of Macau for a few days to visit family and here’s what I had to eat! For those of you who don’t know where Macau is, it’s just a ferry ride away from Hong Kong and it’s like the Las Vegas of China in that it’s all about glitz, glamour, luxury, extravagant hotels and huge casinos!

Portuguese egg tarts

These egg custard tarts are different than the usual “Chinese” egg tarts in that they are more brulee-ed on the top, more custard-y and the pastry is so much more flaky too!

Sesame peanut candy

They sell these everywhere here and make it fresh in front of you. It’s basically a nougat candy but made out of pure sesame seeds and peanuts instead. Am I the only one who loves the flavor of toasted seeds and nuts?

Almond cookies

This is basically almond flour, sugar, and chopped up almonds pressed firmly into a wooden mold and they somehow end up holding itself all together to form a uniform cookie! We always end up buying a couple boxes of these when we come here because they’re just so good! Recently my cousin showed me this new place that featured ones that were baked in a coal oven and they were even better than these ones from the store!

International cuisine

Macau used to be owned by the Portuguese they have quite a bit of influence from that era in their cuisines but they don’t shy away from other cuisines either!

Hong Kong: Rice noodle soup with crab meat balls

Thai food: Fried rice cakes topped with a veggie sauce

Pineapple fried rice with loads of veggies, pork, pineapple chunks and roasted nuts served in a pineapple of course!

Various appetizers including crab cakes, bamboo wrapped chicken, fried and battered veggies, and pork belly lettuce wraps.

Raw tiger shrimp with a spicy herb and garlic sauce

European: Pasta with shrimp, basil and fresh tomato sauce topped with Parmesan

Rice noodles with smoked duck breast and longan broth

Portuguese: Curry fishballs with cuttlefish

Portuguese porkchop bun

This was one intense sandwich. It was literally a giant pork chop sandwiched between a crispy soft portuguese roll. I’m not a fan of red meat but I ended up having a few bites of this. It was very interesting to have such a big piece of meat in the bread but it was pretty good.

My cousin said that this was one of the best places for Portuguese around so we decided to go there for dinner

Flash cooked shrimp seasoned with scallions

This was one of the most tragic things I’ve ever seen in my life…the shrimp were shown to us fresh…and then literally three seconds later…

They were popped into a burning hot stone pot and quick cooked so that they would be steamed to perfection

Stir fried curry noodles with bell pepper, loads of egg, pork and onion

Braised pork with loads of potatatas
