Loving Japanese bread so much lately and Kanadell Bakery by Kootney Loop in Vancouver does just the trick! Kanadell Bakery is the newest and most amazing bakery in the area offering freshly baked bread on the daily. They offer savoury cheese buns, sweet buns, mochi buns, curry buns and even animal shaped buns! In addition to bread, they also offer house-made milk jam in a variety of flavours and miso paste. Their savoury bun options include hot dog bun, corn mayo, ham mayo, croquette bun, garlic cheese bun, yuzu green onion cheese bun, and miso havarti cheese bun!

From my many visits to Kanadell, I’ve noticed that most people come here for their sweeter options. Their melon pan is widely popular and they are often sold out by the end of the day. Notable flavours include the matcha, earl grey and hojicha! Their animal buns are not only cute but they are also stuffed with nutella or custard depending on which type you get. I don’t think it gets any better than that! Last but not least are their mochi loaves and buns. They offer these in a variety of flavours as well and often these sell out too so make sure you get them while they last!

I usually visit them on a week day but had the pleasure of doing a weekend visit a couple weeks ago. I’m glad I went too because I found out that they offered Japanese sando on the weekend made with their bakery bread. All their sandwiches are traditional Japanese flavours including pork tenderloin katsu sando, ebi katsu sando, Japanese egg sando, pork tsukune teriyaki gelee sando, yuzu shichimi tuna sando, and fruits sando with strawberries!

Matcha melon pan

I told you we would be back to try more of their melon pans! The matcha one is Grayson’s favourite out of all the ones we’ve tried. This is because it had a strong matcha flavour to it. Since the cookie crust on top is sweet, he liked how the bitterness of the matcha helped balance out the flavours. He also noted that the matcha cookie crust seemed to be more “crumbly” than the other buns. As he was eating the bun, the cookie crust came apart the top of the bun quite easily. That aside, this was another favourite to add to the list of after work snack options.

Hojicha melon pan

I’ve never seen a hojicha (roasted tea) melon pan before so I was intrigued to try it out! Compared to the matcha and earl grey melon pans, this one had a much more mellow flavour. If I didn’t know it was tea flavoured, I don’t think I would be able to tell. I was looking forward to trying this one since I love hojicha but the flavour wasn’t very prominent. With that being said, it was still an enjoyable bun with a crispy top and soft interior. However, I wouldn’t say it was my favourite out of their melon pan options.

Yuzu matcha bun

After trying their Yuzu green onion bun last time, I was looking for more yuzu treats! Similarly to the green onion bun, I didn’t detect much yuzu flavour which was disappointing but there were citrus notes in the background if you really look for it. The matcha flavour was subtle as well. I didn’t mind though because I loved how the green from the matcha created such a pretty design on the outside of the bun! I used to make these types of buns a lot so it was nice to try it made by someone else for a change.

Maple walnut hot cross bun

Maple and Walnut. Does it get any better than that? I was actually so surprised that the bun was so strong in maple flavour! It was a prominent flavour in the bun and the walnuts added crunch. What makes this bun all the better is that it’s $2.50 for each or $12 for 6!
